With the global economic crisis taking greater hold many motorists are downsizing, car-makers are introducing smaller vehicles. Peugeot has introduced the 107 supermini.

The Peugeot 107 shares its platform with the Toyota Aygo and Citroen C1 as the cars were made at the same manufacturing plant in the Czech Republic.

Green Credentials For The Peugeot 107

The 107 is environmentally friendly as it emits 109g/km of CO2 – this makes it a really clean car and to add to this the 107 should be friendly when filling it up with petrol (gas in the USA). The maker claims the 107 will return 61.3mpg on the combined cycle.

Peugeot 107 Price

The five door 107 Urban is priced (correct at time of going to press) from £8,105. The car on test had a host of options, which took the price of the 107 Urban up to £9,230.

The extras included: Metallic paint at a cost of £350, aircon with recirculation and pollen filter was £500 more, the rev counter added £30 while the front and rear curtain airbags were an extra £200 to the price of the 107.

Peugeot 107 Styling

The Peugeot 107 is a neat looking supermini – What sets it apart from the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo is its larger egg-shaped headlights, a restyled bumper and a prominent central Peugeot badge.

Interior Of The French Supermini

On the inside the 107 has a simple but effective layout. The car has a large rev counter, which is positioned to the right of the steering wheel. All the switchgear is well placed and within easy reach of the driver. The plastics do look a bit cheap but feel solid and look well made. Storage up front is good as there are plenty of cubby-holes for loose change and sunglasses and other odds and ends that a driver may keep in the car.

Four adults of average size will fit in the 107 but it should probably be for relatively short journey’s as it can become a little cramped. The test car had five doors, which made access to the front and rear seats child’s play.

On short journey’s you can carry four adults in the car but the rear passengers can get a bit cramped when on longer journeys. Our test car had five doors, which made getting in and out of the 107 a breeze. Even though boot space is at a premium if you fold the rear seats flat you can fit a 32-inch widescreen television in the car with two adults in the front seats.

Under the bonnet of the Peugeot 107

Powering the Peugeot 107 is a glorious sounding three-cylinder petrol engine, it has a capacity of 998cc and it has a maximum power of 68bhp. With a gross train weight of only 1190kg, the 107 is very sprightly when using low gears and high revs.

Out on the open road overtaking moves will have to be thought out well in advance, as the 107 can be a bit breathless. The figures are reasonable for a car of this size and power – zero to 62mph in 14.2 seconds while the 107 has a top speed of 100mph. The 1.0-litre power plant is mated to a smooth shifting five-speed manual gearbox.

The Peugeot 107 On Test

On the road the Peugeot 107 performed well. It is right at home negotiating the streets in the urban jungle – the small Lion is really agile and copes with potholes and bumps quite well. Parking is a breeze due to the city friendly size of the 107 and manoeuvres are made easy thanks to the good visibility that the rear window gives.

The 107 performs surprisingly well out of town, the driver can feel what the front wheels are doing as the steering is communicative, this makes for a good driving experience.

The Peugeot is a cracking supermini just like the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo- its perfect for town driving - the only decision is what badge to choose: Peugeot, Toyota or Citroen.
